How best to calculate correct wheel and castor, our guide to selection


The following is how best to choose the correct wheel or castor, other factors can and will play an important part for example you may only want or need to move something once or occasionally so your purchasing criteria maybe more price orientated. If the castors or wheels are likely to play a more important roll then price is less important than life expectancy and how well the unit will work when used if you’re manually pushing then the easier the movement the less likely injury from repetitive usage your employees will have. If however aesthetics is more important design will be the deciding factor. Whatever your reasons for purchase we can help you find the correct product for you or your application.

  1. Calculate total weightload including frame / trolley

  2. Floor condition - good, bad or indifferent

  3. Wheel type -  the harder the wheel the lower the rolling resistance

  4. Floor damage - use tyred wheel, no hard tread wheels

  5. Cycle or duty to determine service factor required

  6. Manual or mechanical handled or towed (use only towable castor and wheels)

  7. Likely impact damage - perhaps being push on or off kerbs

  8. Wheel hits obstacle at more than 20 degrees can cause damage

  9. If towed what speed, distance and obstacles

  10. Temperature

  11. Expected life cycle required

  12. Will weather or environment have an effect? If so, you will require stainless steel


There are several popular configurations:

  • 4 swivel castors which makes can help with tight areas

  • 2 swivel & 2 fixed when steering in required

  • 2 swivel & 2 swivel braked

  • 2 swivel with directional locks & 2 swivel braked if controlled movement needed

  • 4 swivel & 2 centrally located fixed often known as rocking trolley for tight work areas

Floor condition

Tested with hard rolling surface, surface Obstacle 5% of wheel diameter and not greater than 90 Shore A less for harder wheels. Obstacle size 100mm width between 2.5% and 5mm radius.

Maximum 4 minutes with 25% stopping cycle time
